‘The single variety Touriga Nacional has won a total of seven silver and gold medals over the past two years’

SET IN THE HEART of the Dão region, itself surrounded by four mountains – Serra da Estrela, Serra do Caramulo, Serra da Nave and Serra do Buçaco – and two rivers Rio Dão and Rio Mondego – Julia Kemper Wines make full advantage of the unique biodiversity available to them for the winemaking process, maintaining a strictly organic method with no recourse to chemical or synthetic treatments. Grape growers as well as winemakers, Kemper and her team are knowledgeable about every aspect of the process, allowing for quality control every step along the way and the ultimate production of delicious and perfectly balanced wines, all of which are regulars on the winners’ rostrum at all the respected wine awards, both nationally and internationally.

The lemony-coloured Julia Kemper White 2009, for example, took gold medal at the MundusVini – Biofach 2011 in Nuremberg, Germany, while the blend of Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Roriz and Jaen, which makes up the intense garnet-coloured Julia Kemper Red, has scooped gold three times for the 2009 vintage. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and for four months in the bottle before going on sale, this balanced, elegant and full-bodied blend has aromas of forest fruits, combining melodiously with hints of mocha and violets.

The single variety Touriga Nacional has won a total of seven silver and gold medals over the past two years, honouring its complexity and longevity, and Curiosity, a special blend of Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels and four months in the bottle, is also a gold medal bearer and one with plenty of intrigue to make wine lovers come back to taste it again and again.

The unique climate of the Dão region gives Julia Kemper’s wines a structural richness that allows them to remain unchanged for more than 40 hours after the bottle has been opened, due to the acidity and the mineral wealth of tannins. This makes them splendid wines for drinking at home as well as in a restaurant – although the likelihood of leaving a bottle unemptied by nightfall is somewhat low!

With positive criticism from the likes of Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson and Sarah Ahmed, as well as the bounty of awards, Julia Kemper wines are ones to look out for.
